Colombo, September 11, 2023 – The Asia Cup 2023 Super 4 clash between India and Pakistan witnessed rain interruptions, but it was the relentless dedication of the groundstaff at R Premadasa Stadium in Colombo that allowed the game to reach a conclusion. India captain Rohit Sharma and senior batter Virat Kohli expressed their gratitude and admiration for the groundstaff’s tremendous effort in ensuring the match could take place.
In a rain-affected encounter that spanned two days, India emerged victorious over Pakistan by a record margin of 228 runs. Despite several interruptions, a total of 58 overs of play was possible on Monday, September 11, leading to a historic result in the India-Pakistan rivalry.
The match initially came to a halt on the original fixture day, Sunday, due to heavy rainfall during the 25th over of Pakistan’s first innings. The groundstaff at the Colombo venue worked tirelessly between the game stoppage at 4:53 PM and the third umpire’s inspection at 8:30 PM to shield the ground from thundershowers. Hopes of resuming the match on Sunday were dashed when rain returned.
Monday brought persistent morning showers, and commentators were pleasantly surprised to find that the ground had been well-covered before the rain arrived, leaving the playing surface relatively dry. The groundstaff utilized fans and lights to expedite the drying process, enabling a full day of play.
Virat Kohli, who received the player of the match award, acknowledged the groundstaff’s extraordinary efforts, saying, “A loud shout out to all the groundsmen for the work they have put in to make this game possible. They did a fantastic job.”
Rohit Sharma also emphasized the importance of the team getting valuable game time and commended the groundstaff for their dedication, saying, “We are happy to get some game time. A lot of guys did not have game time, and that was great support from the groundsman as well. From the word go, they were right on the money. I know how difficult it was to come and do the job, do it the next day. We would like to thank them as a team.”
“It was important to get some game time. It was more possible due to these guys who have put in the effort,” Sharma added.
As India prepares for its Super 4 clash against Sri Lanka on Tuesday, September 12, the groundstaff may once again play a crucial role in ensuring that the game can proceed smoothly. Their dedication and tireless work have been integral to the success of the Asia Cup 2023 despite the unpredictable weather conditions in Colombo.
