History of the SA20
The SA20 League began in 2023 to help T20 cricket grow in South Africa. It became very popular fast, bringing in top players from all over the world. Tournament Format – SA20
The upcoming 2025 season of South Africa’s top T20 Cricket League will happen from 9 January to 8 February. 34 T20 games will be played during this time. League’s dates overlap with Australia’s Big Bash League and the Dubai T10 tournament.
1. Group Stages and Playoffs
The SA20 League is like other T20 leagues played around the world. It has a group stage and playoffs. In the group stage, all teams play against each other twice. Winning a game gives teams points. The top 4 teams go to the playoffs. The top two teams play in Qualifier 1, and the winner goes straight to the final. The team that loses gets another chance in Qualifier 2. The 3rd and 4th place teams play in an eliminator match. The winner of that match goes to Qualifier 2. The team that wins Qualifier 2 goes to the final, and the winner of the final becomes the SA20 champion.
2. Points and Qualification
Teams earn points based on their performance in matches. Winning a game gives three points, while a no-result or tie gives them one point. Net run rate also played crucial role. The teams with the most points at the end of the group stage with good NRR qualify for the playoffs. In case of equal points, team with good NRR will be considered ahead in table. It is important for teams, not to lose games with big margins. It is helpful in maintaining the Net run rate, as it could be a deciding factor in reaching playoffs.
